Mouth taping is having a moment. So is nasal breathing. The wellness conversation has shifted in a meaningful way over the past few years. James Nestor's bestseller Breath put it on the map, and now there's barely a wellness podcast that hasn't covered the science of breathing through your nose.

But there's a layer of this conversation that almost nobody is talking about. We're paying close attention to how we breathe through our noses, yet we're not paying any attention to what's inside them.

Every other part of personal care has its daily ritual. Hands. Teeth. Skin. The nose, the one part of the body that actually filters the air we breathe every minute of every day, has never had one. There's a reason for that. Until recently, there wasn't a word for what builds up in there. We needed one, so we created one. It's called Rhinobuncus, and once you understand it, you'll get why it needs attention.

Your nose is a filter, and like any filter, it collects what passes through it

Your nose processes thousands of liters of air every day. The first two centimeters inside each nostril (the anterior nares and nasal vestibule) are where most of the filtration happens. The skin and hair inside the nose do their best to trap pollen, dust, mold spores, pet dander, smoke, pollution, and germs before they reach the deeper parts of the upper airway. This is your body's primary air filter. It does it without you noticing or thinking about it, all day, every day.

Most people brush their teeth twice a day. Wash their hands compulsively. Run skincare routines that involve at least three products. The nose, which is doing more invisible work than any of them, gets no dedicated wellness care at all.

Over the course of a day, the trapped material inside the nose combines with mucus produced by the nasal tissues. In dry environments such as air-conditioned offices, airplane cabins, and low-humidity climates, it dries into a layer of debris and crusty “boogers” that sits inside the nostrils. This stuff is what we call Rhinobuncus.

Where the word comes from (and why having one matters)

Rhinobuncus (rye-no-BUNK-us). The daily accumulation of dried mucus, allergens, dust, and airborne particulate matter in the anterior nares (nostrils).

The word was coined in a 2024 clinical study presented at the American Academy of Otolaryngology in Miami by a team that included Dr. Gail Lebovic (NasoClenz's founder, a surgeon, inventor) and Dr. Keith Matheny among other ENT physicians.¹ Their phrasing, verbatim:

“Given there is no clinical terminology for this type of intranasal debris, we have coined the term 'Rhinobuncus' referring to the intranasal 'junk' and mucus.”

The phenomenon is real. Every nose collects it, every day. It just didn't have a name. So they created the term for the clinical domain.

There's a precedent for naming an unnamed thing. “Gut microbiome” was just “bacteria in your intestines” until somebody gave it a better word, and the better word reorganized an entire wellness category around it. “Maskne” was just acne until a word was needed for it, and within months it had peer-reviewed dermatology research attached to it. Naming something is the first step toward addressing it.

Recent clinical work has measured what happens when the anterior nares are actively cleansed, and the picture is clearer than most people would guess.

Four ways Rhinobuncus buildup affects you

  1. It increases nasal resistance. The anterior nares are the narrowest part of the nasal passage, the highest-resistance point under normal conditions. Adding even a partial layer of debris meaningfully restricts airflow. In a 2025 pilot study of collegiate and high-school baseball players presented at AAAAI San Diego, targeted cleansing of the anterior nares produced a 47% reduction in nasal resistance and 25% increase in airflow at five minutes (effect partially rebounded by ten minutes but maintained an overall 12% improvement from baseline).²
  2. It holds the day's allergen load against your nasal tissue. Whatever pollen, mold, dust, or particulate matter was in the air today is sitting in your anterior nares right now. As long as it's there, it's in continuous contact with the immune system, fueling the response that produces allergy symptoms. A 2023 pilot study of agricultural workers found that after two weeks of twice-daily cleansing, 84% of subjects with severe symptoms reported a reduction, and 71% of symptomatic patients reported a decrease in frequent coughing or shortness of breath.³
  3. It makes CPAP therapy harder to tolerate. If you use CPAP, every night the machine pushes pressurized air through your nasal passages for hours. Existing Rhinobuncus buildup gets pushed deeper, and the constant pressurized airflow dries the nasal tissue further.⁴ The result is crusting, dryness, and discomfort that many long-term users describe as the hardest part of sticking with the therapy. In a 2023 study of 26 long-term CPAP users, after two weeks of twice-daily cleansing before and after CPAP use, 81% reported the routine was beneficial alongside their CPAP, and 58% reported CPAP felt more comfortable.⁵

  1. It limits nasal breathing efficiency. Everything happening in the nasal breathing wellness conversation, from nitric oxide production⁶ to improved oxygen efficiency to better CO2 tolerance during exercise, assumes the airway is open and clear. Rhinobuncus in the anterior nares creates a layer of obstruction exactly where it impacts airflow the most. If you're focused on mouth taping or training nasal-only breathing during exercise, the buildup at the front of your nose is the bottleneck you haven't addressed.

How to address it (cleaning your nose)

The instinct most people have when they hear about nasal cleansing is to blow their nose, pick their nose or reach for a neti pot or saline rinse. Saline irrigation is a legitimate and well-supported part of nasal care but it targets the sinuses as opposed to the front part of the nose (the nostrils). Randomized trials suggest saline irrigation may reduce patient-reported disease severity in allergic rhinitis,⁷ and irrigation does an effective job of flushing the deeper nasal passages using saline.

But irrigation must be done carefully with sterile solutions or serious infections can arise that can even cause meningitis.⁸ Nasal and sinus irrigation is one modality, but the skin and hair inside the nostrils (the anterior nares) is completely missed when using rinses. Irrigation uses a nozzle that usually bypasses the front part of the nasal passage. The cleansing of the nostrils is most commonly done with the finger, a mechanical way to remove the Rhinobuncus (dried crusty combination of mucus and airborne particles) which helps to open up the nose and improve airflow.

How often should I clean the anterior nares?

For routine nasal hygiene, twice daily, morning and evening, is sufficient for most people, integrated into the same ritual as face washing or tooth brushing. People with high daily allergen exposure, CPAP users, or athletes in dusty environments may benefit from additional cleansing during the day.

Is this only for people with allergies or CPAP?

No. Rhinobuncus accumulates in every nose that breathes. The effects are most noticeable in people with elevated exposure or sensitivity (allergy sufferers, CPAP users, athletes, frequent travelers), but the underlying daily hygiene principle applies to everyone.

Is Rhinobuncus harmful?

Rhinobuncus is not harmful in the way an infection or disease is harmful. It is a natural byproduct of the nose doing its job as the body's air filter. Allowing it to accumulate without regular removal can contribute to reduced nasal airflow, increased allergen exposure, and discomfort. Cleaning the anterior nares regularly is a hygiene practice, not a medical treatment.

Should I do both saline irrigation and anterior nares cleansing?

Many people do. They address different parts of the nose: irrigation flushes the deeper passages with liquid, and anterior nares cleansing mechanically clears the front of the nose. If you're already doing a saline routine, the anterior nares cleansing is a complementary addition. If you've never done either, the anterior nares are arguably the simpler place to start.
